What's gotten into Kristin Hersh ? We knew her because of the Throwing Muses, founded at the beginning of the Eighties, a 4AD labelled group, close to the Pixies, and one of the leader of its generation with the album "The Real Ramona" released in 1991. Today, in 2005, Kristin Hersh, we thought was out of this business, especially since we quickly scanned through her last too folk, too acoustic and too nice albums, is now coming back. This type of come back is rare, but it seems more and more fashionable. Maybe it's the mid-life crisis ? But, what is this come back we're talking about, may you ask ? Well, it's the come back of the wild, almost inaudible, hardcore noise. Even Courtney Love could learn from the album of 50 Foot Wave, which is as extremely violent as" Pretty on the Inside" of Hole was. Everything here is extreme : the ultra saturated guitars, the fastest possible rhythmics, the hoarse voice. Obviously, this isn't death-metal, because you can hear some nice melodies among this noisy maelstrom, but all the same, this is the essence of frustration, of anger, of distaste, an UFO in Kristin Hersh's discography. Unless it's a real new direction and a start with a clean slate. Anyway, this album is terribly reassuring for those who are scared to become limp flaccid larva as they're ageing : it's still possible at forty to have as much energy as groups of twenty years old.
